Both Crosscut and Untangle show that it’s possible to program graphically, in a way that meshes well with the stylus as an input mechanism, and the sketchy way of thinking that we want to achieve.

These projects relied on quite fundamentally different programming models. But no single model will be the best for everything — we need different tools for different purposes, after all. From this, the logical next step is figuring out what an overarching system might look like — one that can support an ecology of different computational mechanics. How can we create a single environment where different computational models interact with each other, and with the human holding a stylus?

Habitat is a research prototype that explores how various representational and computational approaches can coexist on a single page.

We will have more to share about Habitat in a future update.
